Democracy Under Siege

Recent developments in Los Angeles, where violent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids stimulated protests--which the president then sent Marines and National Guardsmen to smother--and where a Latino U.S. Senator was thrown to the ground and handcuffed after trying to ask a question of the Homeland Security Secretary, along with an embarrassing military parade in Washington D.C., have heightened our fear that democracy is under siege, that America under Donald Trump more closely resembles 1930s Germany or a police state than the free country that has been a beacon of liberty for almost 250 years. So today's blog isn't about sports.

Once upon a time, America was the "shining city on a hill."

A place where freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the rule of law were fundamental values.

Where citizens were free to disagree with their leaders.

Where students could discuss alternative points of view, debate radical ideas and gain perspective from other cultures.

Where the media served as a valuable watchdog and investigator.

Where the three branches of government provided necessary checks and balances.

Where the highest court in the land was motivated by justice, upholding the constitution, and protecting the best interests of the people.

Where diversity was cultivated and celebrated.

Where "huddled masses, yearning to breathe free" were welcomed with open arms.

Where every man and woman, regardless of their station, were seen as equal in the eyes of the law.

Where scientific research and innovation set the standard for the rest of the world.

Where allies were supported and human rights violators were shunned.

Where America's bounty was shared with those less fortunate.

That place no longer exists.

Under Donald Trump, America has become a land of tyranny, bigotry and corruption.

A place where the presidency is a vehicle for revenge and personal gain.

Where opponents of the regime are subject to criminal investigations.

Where ICE raids detain innocents and immigrants are deported without due process.

Where books are banned and universities are told what to teach and who they can admit.

Where media criticism is met with threats and retaliation.

Where Congress is cowed by fear of retribution and the Supreme Court has become a political tool.

Where any non-white person is at risk and categorized as a DEI hire.

Where research funding is decimated and quack theories are substituted for basic science.

Where allies are threatened with annexation and tariffs, while strongmen and enemies are appeased.

Where impoverished children in third world countries are dying due to our neglect.

After just five months of Trump 2.0, democracy is on life support.

To remain silent is to be complicit in the destruction of our values and ideals.

If we believe in freedom and democracy, we must make our voices heard.

Saturday's "No Kings" rallies sent a strong message. They must be sustained and built upon.

We all must stand up, speak out, protest and vote...before it's too late.

American history includes some less shining moments but your blog chronicles only some of the current policies and behaviors that are antithetical to the values that have made America such a great country. How can we tolerate such cruelty and bigotry and ignore what history should have taught us?

Let us hope that people continue to speak out and protest. Thank you.

A concise and beautifully written summary of the horror we are living through. To the commenter who said they read this blog for sports not politics, this is not about politics, it is about decency and humanity.
