It's Grrrrreat!!

Step aside, Poulan Weed-Eater Bowl.

Long considered the worst college football bowl name of all time, the Weed-Eater Bowl has lost its hallowed place in post-season annals.

Introducing...drumroll please... the "Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl."

Seriously, folks, the Sun Bowl, one of the oldest and in my opinion, most distinguished bowls in the college football hierarchy, is now being sponsored by Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, and will be known as the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

As we've written many times, bowl games have been diminished in recent years by the continuous proliferation of games, the participation of lots of undeserving teams, the onset of the College Football Playoff (which has dominated the national conversation) and the increase in commercialization.

So we have the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl, the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl, the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl, the Walk On's Bistreaux and Bar Independence Bowl, the Cheez-It Bowl and the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The reality is, you need a title sponsor to afford the ridiculous payouts being demanded by conference commissioners, but unfortunately, the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl is destined to become a national punchline.

Pre-season Honors: Congrats to Stanford's offensive tackle Walker Little and cornerback Paulson Adebo for being named to the pre-season AP College Football All-America Team.

Cal linebacker Evan Weaver made the second team.

Pre-season plaudits are nice, but the ones that count come after the season.

No Early Kickoffs: The Pac-12's consideration of 9am kickoffs was short-lived. The conference announced yesterday that there wasn't enough time to implement the experiment in 2019. Phew!

This ill-conceived notion may be revived in 2020. One can only hope cooler heads will continue to prevail.
