End the Madness

With all due respect to World Cup Soccer, Major League Baseball and the NBA Draft, everything that’s going on in sports right now seems pretty trivial compared to what’s happening at our southern border.

America has always been the “shining city on a hill”, to quote Ronald Reagan. The moral authority for the world. A refuge for those seeking freedom from oppression.

No more.

We’ve been a nation of immigrants.

No more. Unless you’re from Norway.

We used to sanction countries committing human rights violations.

No more. Now we’re one of them.

The last 18 months have been difficult for those of us who believe in honesty, humility, racial equality, treating women with respect, preserving the planet, and helping those less fortunate.

But the Trump regime’s “family separation” policy marks a horrifying new low in hatred, cruelty and bigotry.

Children in cages.

Babies being ripped from their mothers’ arms.

2,500 kids used as leverage to force funding of a border wall. A wall that was supposed to be paid for by Mexico.

It’s time to speak out. It’s time to stand up and be counted. It’s time to protest, write letters, call your representatives.

This can’t go on.

We’re heading down a slippery slope toward tyranny. It’s happened elsewhere in the world when people have fallen for con men or fallen in behind demagogues.

Don’t let it happen here.
